The best ten Serie A players at Brazil 2014
Miroslav Klose set an important record and won the Cup: impossible to do better. Pogba was the best young player of the tournament, but his low form was evident. The same as Arturo Vidal
by Anthony Pepe and Federico Formica
1. Miroslav Klose He scored two goals, becoming the best goalscorer ever in the FIFA World Cup. Oh, and he raised the World Cup... Can you imagine a better tournament? Klose's stay at Lazio is still uncertain but one thing is sure: Miro has crowned an amazing career in the best possible way. He deserves it.

2. Paul Pogba The Juventus ace has been named best young player of the Brazilian tournament. He had his peak in the round of 16, when he scored the opener against Nigeria, smoothing the way the next round for the Bleus. Actually, Pogba's general performance weasn't as good as last seaso. And he looked a bit nervous.

3. Juan Camilo Zuniga His World Cup will be always remembered for the knee-knockout blow he gave to Neymar, putting an end to Brazil's number 10 (and Brazil's hopes to win). But the full-back gave a valiant contribution to Colombia's excellent tournament. Perkerman always trusted him as he only missed one game (the last of the Group Stage against Japan). Napoli's fans can be happy: maybe they've just re-discovered the atomic full-back he was until two years ago.

4. Mario Yepes Many observers were overcritical with Pekerman for his biding trust in his 38-year-old captain Mario Yepes. The Atalanta defender showed that his coach was right: he was the commander in chief of the Cafeteros' defence and he was the last to surrender - together with James Rodriguez - in the quarter finals against Brazil. Colombia conceded three goals only in the entire tournament and no one can't deny that Yepes played a huge role in that.

5. Lucas Biglia Who would have thought that Biglia would play the World Cup as a starter? Probably not even Biglia himself. He was essentially ignored by Petkovic - and then Reja - at Lazio: few at the end of the 2013-14 season would have bet a single Euro on Biglia's call by Sabella. But Biglia was part of the 23 and, after the Group Stage, he became a pillar of the midfield in the Albiceleste side. Biglia replaced Gago, allowing Sabella to deploy De Michelis as centre-back in place of Napoli's Federico Fernandez, who was disappointing. Biglia gave balance to his team and he never left the pitch from the Round of 16 on.

6. Juan Cuadrado Fiorentina's winger played a fantastic World Cup and would have deserved the podium in this chart... if he hadn't failed the most important game: the quarter final against Brazil, when he never managed to dribble an opponent and he even wasted the best opportunity, an inviting counter-attack in a 3 vs 2 situation. Before that unlucky game, Cuadrado served two assists against Greece, another with Ivory Coast, he scored one goal to Japan and another assist in the round of 16 against Uruguay. Not bad...

7. Nigel de Jong He was the only Serie A player in the team that placed third at Brazil 2014. The brute from Milan was absolutely crucial for Van Gaal, as he proved in the semifinal, when the new coach of Man Utd. gave him a place in the starting-eleven although he came from a bad injury (a groin's sprain). His semifinal lasted one hour, but his contribution was huge in terms of defensive presence and leadership. He fits perfectly in such a working-class side.

8. Gervinho With two goals and one assist, one could say that Gervinho's World Cup was a clean success. That's true in part, but expectations on Roma's winger were higher, especially in terms of leadership on his team-mates. He was intermittently devastating, but he suffered - above all - the low form of Ivory Coast's authentic leader: Yayà Touré. Without the Man City star, even an ace like Gervinho struggled.

9. Arturo Vidal Here we are with another top player who was exhausted after an intense season. King Arturo's contribution to Chile was huge, but he was light years away from the devastating box-to-box midfielder that Juventus' fans appreciate during the year. His defensive-minded game against Brazil in the round of 16 was the best of the tournament.

10. Dries Mertens In the opening match, Wilmots gave him a seat on the bench, then, he entered in the second half and he scored the decisive goal, which completed the comeback over Algeria. In the following games he obtained the craved starter place. And he disappointed. So Wilmots changed his mind and, in the quarter final against Argentina he played the Mertens card in the last 30 minutes. Unfortunately it didn't work out, but Napoli's attacker keeps proving to be more dangerous entering in the second part of the game, when the opponents are tired, than as a starter.
