2010: Roma performs an unforgettable comeback vs Bayern Munich!
The Giallorossi turned a double by Mario Gomez and won a decisive match to qualify for Champions League's round of 16

Pep Guardiola and Mehdi Benatia will return in a stadium where they already played in the past. Everybody knows what happened with the Moroccan defender, who signed for the Germans after a summer-long soap opera. Benatia said he wanted to stay in Rome but the club had to sell him for money, and Roma's president Pallotta replied calling him “liar”. Pep Guardiola had a short spell in Giallorosso in 2002-2003. He only played 4 Serie A games and a Champions League cap before being suspended for an alleged doping case. Guardiola was later discharged and the FIGC (the Italian football federation) even annulled the charge.

But this game also has glorious precedents. Each time Bayern Munich visited Roma at the Olimpico stadium, the Giallorossi were living a golden age of their history.

The first time was in the 1984-85 season in the quarter finals of the Cup Winners' Cup (you can read the article here).

The second encounter between Roma and Bayern Munich took place in the 2010-2011 season, in Champions League. The coach was Claudio Ranieri, the man who managed to resuscitate a side which energy seemed to have used up after a great spell with Luciano Spalletti. Under Ranieri's management, Roma almost managed to clinch the title to Inter in a great head-to-head, although at the end Mourinho retained the Scudetto in Nerazzurro.

That was an exciting game for Roma fans as the Giallorossi secured the qualification for the next stage with an amazing comeback, from 0-2 to 3-2! After a double by Mario Gomez, Roma played a spectacular second half with a super-offensive 4-2-4. Jeremy Menez and Mirko Vučinić on the flanks, Francesco Totti and Marco Borriello as strikers changed the game. Borriello, De Rossi and Totti from the penalty spot completed the feat. Van Gaal's side was already qualified, and Roma also got a pass for the Round of 16, where they were eliminated by Shakhtar Donetsk. Everything indicates that tonight will be an unforgettable one for Roma fans. Premises couldn't be better as the Olimpico is sold out and the club got its best stadium income ever in a single game: €3 Million!
