1985: Roma-Bayern Munich 1-2, a touching display of love from Roma fans
The Lupi lost the second leg of the Cup Winners' Cup quarter finals against the Bavarians, but the tifosi never stopped singing and supporting their team

Pep Guardiola and Mehdi Benatia will return to a stadium where they already played in the past. Everybody knows what happened with the Moroccan defender, who signed for the Germans after a summer-long soap opera. Benatia said he wanted to stay in Rome but the club had to sell him for money, and Roma's president Pallotta replied calling him "a liar”. Pep Guardiola had a short spell in Giallorosso in 2002-2003. He only played 4 Serie A games and a Champions League match before being suspended for an alleged doping case. Guardiola was later discharged and the FIGC (the Italian football federation) even annulled the charge.

But this game also has glorious precedents. Each time Bayern Munich visited Roma at the Olimpico stadium, was during a golden age of the Giallorossi history.

The first time was in the 1984-85 season in the quarter finals of the Cup Winners' Cup. Two years had passed since their second title and the Lupi were still one of the strongest sides in Italy and in Europe, with great players such as Paulo Roberto Falcao, Carlo Ancelotti, Bruno Conti and Roberto Pruzzo. A young Giuseppe Giannini, future captain of the Lupi, was growing in that fantastic side led by Sven Goran Eriksson. Bayern won 2-0 in the first leg and Roma was seeking revenge in the return match but Lothar Matthäus opened the scoring in the 32nd minute on a penalty kick.

With ten minutes to go, Roma's Sebastiano Nela scored the equaliser but Giallorossi's hopes were buried 60 second later by Kogl. What happened in the following minutes was simply amazing. This is what Udo Lattek, Bayern's trainer, said at the end of the match: "I remained overturned from what happened at the Olympic Stadium. In so many years in football I never saw a losing team, being eliminated, which is out of the Cup, being supported in such a way by their fans. Simply marvellous. I would like to have supporters like this. What a show, I was almost touched". Bayern was later eliminated in the semifinal against Everton.
