After the likes of Jackson Martinez and Falcao were linked to Milan, hopes of the transfer market of old finally unlocking for the Rossoneri looked probable. However, each day turned less and less likely that either of the two Colombians - or even any player of their calibre like Soldado, Negredo, and finally Torres - would come. Luckily for il Diavolo, Galliani pulled yet another rabbit, allowing his fans to admire Fernando el Niño Torres every other weekend from the stands of the San Siro.
Or has he? Overall, in fact, the reaction to this news hasn’t been totally positive. Many have claimed that this is just a ploy to sell shirts, while others believe that Milan has officially now become a “has been” team. People on Twitter were complaining that they would have much rather have signed Taraabt or even no one over Torres.
The Spanish striker had an awful spell at Chelsea after he signed for them for £50 million from Liverpool, an unbelievable amount today. Nevertheless, the reason Torres could command that fee was because he was arguably one of the top 3 best strikers at the time. It should also be mentioned that this isn’t the first time that Milan have been linked to Torres. Back in 2007 after the sale of Shevchenko, Galliani was close to signing the Spaniard, however the £30 million needed to sign him was considered excessive.
Should Milan fans really be so upset? I don't think so, and I will explain why Torres won’t have the same spell as he had at Chelsea. El Niño's main problem was the pressure that he experienced at Stamford Bridge because of his huge transfer fee, and because he switched Liverpool's jersey with arch-rivals Chelsea's. By signing with Milan on loan, he lifted such pressure as he changed league and arrived on a free transfer.
His record before Chelsea, at Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, is very good. As a youngster at Atletico he set many records, most notably becoming the youngest captain ever at the tender age of 19. He made over 200 appearances in his 6 season in Madrid with 82 goals. His exploits earned him a £20 million move to Liverpool where he scored more than a goal every 2 games.
The tempo of the Serie A may help him out as well. The former Liverpool man no longer has the legs that he once possessed, and the Italian league is not as fast as the Premier League. Torres is a technical player that possesses all the qualities of a perfect number 9, technique, height and a burst of acceleration (but as mentioned before, over the long run he's not as pacey).
All in all, above anyone, Torres will want to perform and prove his critics wrong. He can become a hit at the San Siro just like he was at Anfield and the Vicente Calderon.
